ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Koman ferry was built to move people and cars between the Drin river’s dams; it became, almost by accident, one of Europe’s great boat trips. For three hours the boat threads a gorge of green water between limestone walls that rise 800 metres, past waterfalls, goat tracks and village jetties, from Koman dam up to Fierzë for the road to Valbona. Travellers do it in both directions — the morning run down is the photographers’ choice, the afternoon run up delivers you to the valley by evening.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Drin cascade — Fierzë, Koman and Vau Dejës dams — was built from the 1970s to light Communist Albania; the Koman reservoir drowned the old river road and the ferry (locally “Berisha ferry” after its long-serving captain family) became the only link for the gorge villages. In the 2000s backpackers found it, and the Daily Telegraph named it among the world’s great boat journeys; the boat now runs a scheduled seasonal service alongside the local one.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The ferry runs ~3 hours through the Drin gorge between Koman dam and Fierzë.
Gorge walls rise up to 800 m from the water — the reason for the “Alpine fjord” nickname.
The reservoirs were built 1970s–1980s as Albania’s hydro backbone; the ferry is the gorge’s only road.
Seasonal schedule roughly April–October; book a day ahead in July–August.
