ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Theth sits in a green bowl of the Shala valley, ringed by the granite towers of the Accursed Mountains — a village of stone towers and one famous white church that was, until the road came in 2017, a day’s walk from anywhere. Today it is the Alps’ hiking capital: the Blue Eye spring in its gorge, the Grunas waterfall, the locked-tower legend of the Nikgjuraj tower, guesthouse tables of home-made cheese and raki, and the great 6-hour crossing over the Valbona pass — the single most famous hike in the Balkans — starting at the village’s edge.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Theth was settled by the Shala clan in the 15th–16th centuries, a Catholic island among the mountains that kept its church, its Kanun law and its blood-feud truces for four centuries of Ottoman rule. The village church of St Nicholas dates from 1892; the nearby Nikgjuraj locked tower (kulla e ngujuar) — where a woman threatened by a blood feud could shelter for months — is the last of its kind in Albania, restored as a museum. The National Park of Theth (1966, 2,630 ha) protected the valley’s forests and the river gorge; the road from Shkodra finally arrived in 2017, and the village turned from mountain mystery to hiking capital within a decade.
