ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Valbona is the other side of the pass — a wide, gravel-white valley running up to the walls of Maja Jezerca (2,694 m, the Albanian Alps’ highest peak), with the river braiding through guesthouse meadows and the hamlets of Dragobi, Valbona and Kukaj climbing toward the peaks. Hikers arrive over the ridge from Theth to a cold beer and a valley dinner; the Koman ferry arrives from the other direction in season, bringing travellers up the Drin gorge to the trailheads. Bears, chamois and capercaillie survive in the forests above; the village fights a hydropower developer in the courts below — the valley’s two truths, in one panorama.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The Story Behind the Place
The valley was settled by the Krasniq clan in the 15th century, high-pasture shepherds who wintered the flocks down at Bajram Curri and summered the valley — transhumance that still moves each May. Valbona village carried the Ottoman-era caravan road from Gjakova over the pass; the 20th century left it a timber and mining outpost with a chromium mine above Dragobi, closed in the 1990s. The valley entered the Valbona National Park (1996), and since the 2010s its guesthouse network — led by the village’s celebrated hosts — has made it the northern Alps’ second pole, joined to Theth by the famous crossing.
