ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Valbona valley is the Alps at their widest and kindest: the river braids white through gravel banks, guesthouse meadows run to the treeline, and the hamlets of Kukaj and Rrogam sit in cirques under the massif’s highest walls. The walk from the village up the Kukaj track is the valley’s classic day — 3 hours of narrowing gorge to a pasture bowl under the Jezerca-Prift ridge, with lunch at the mountain hut and the whole panorama at your back.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Krasniq clan settled the valley in the 15th century; their high-pasture transhumance still runs each May, flocks climbing past the guesthouses to the summer huts. The chromium mine above Dragobi (closed 1990s) built the valley road; the national park (1996) protected the forests of bear, chamois and capercaillie above it. Since 2010 the valley has been at the centre of Albania’s biggest environmental fight — hydropower concessions against the river itself — and the guesthouses have become both economy and activism.
