ROUTE
A flat day through three UNESCO-world sites — the Roman mosaics of Aquileia, the star fortress of Palmanova and the Lombard capital of Cividale.
ABOUT THIS ROUTE
Three of Friuli’s four UNESCO inscriptions sit within an afternoon’s flat riding of each other: Aquileia’s early-Christian mosaic complex, Palmanova’s perfect nine-pointed star fortress (1593) and Cividale’s Lombard Tempietto. The loop runs some 45 kilometres on quiet plain roads and the Alpe Adria cycle corridor — leave from Aquileia’s basilica square, ride the star’s rampart ring at Palmanova for lunch, and finish under the Ponte del Diavolo in Cividale, where a train can carry you and the bike home.
