ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Mangalem quarter is the photograph in every Albania book: white-walled, red-roofed Ottoman houses climbing the castle hill in stacked rows, their rows of windows earning Berat the “2,000-window city” name poets gave it. Across the Osum the older Gorica quarter sits on its own slope — quieter, cobbled, the artisans’ bank — and the seven-arched Gorica bridge (1780s, restored 1920s) ties the two historic halves together. Evening is the time: the houses light up window by window above the riverside promenade.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Mangalem was the Ottoman craft and merchant quarter, its houses rebuilt after fires through the 17th–19th centuries in the tiered style that made the town’s silhouette; Gorica (from the Slavic “little mountain”) is the older settlement bank, recorded before the Ottoman conquest. The bridge dates to the 1780s, replacing an earlier wooden crossing, and carried the main road until the 1920s, when the concrete bridge downstream took the traffic. Both quarters fall inside the 2008 UNESCO historic centre.
