ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
An hour’s drive south-east of Berat, the Osum river cuts a gorge through the Skrapar limestone — walls up to 100 metres, waterfalls feeding pools, and rapids that run from spring snowmelt to autumn trickle. Albania Rafting Group’s base at Çorovodë has run the canyon since the 2000s, and the half-day trip from Berat — 8 km of water beneath the narrows called the Cathedral — is now one of the country’s signature adventures, doable before dinner back in the old town.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The canyon’s rock is Mesozoic limestone folded into the Skrapar anticline; its pools and potholes carry local names from the shepherds’ lore. Rafting began here in 2004 when the Albania Rafting Group first ran commercial trips — the first commercial whitewater operation in Albania — and Çorovodë’s May festival has grown around the season. The road from Berat follows the old caravan route up the Osum to Corovode and the Bogovë falls.
