ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Butrint’s protection covers more than the city: an 86-square-kilometre national park of lagoon, wetland, forest and hills surrounds the ruins, and the wildlife is half the visit. Flamingos and pelicans feed on the lagoon; terrapins sun on the channel banks; the trails between lake and sea run through oak and myrtle shade. Kayaks work the Vivari channel in season — the same route ancient ships took from the city to the Ionian.
