ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Lepenski Vir is where Europe’s Mesolithic became civilisation: a settlement on the Danube terrace from ~9500 years ago, whose trapezoid houses face the river’s sacred profile and whose red-sandstone boulder sculptures — the fish-hybrid “gods” — are among the oldest monumental art on the continent. The museum’s glass walkway crosses the excavated village; the sculptures are here and in Belgrade’s collection.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Excavated 1965–70 (Dragoslav Srejović), Lepenski Vir rewrote Europe’s prehistory: a Mesolithic hunter-fisher society building planned houses and carving monumental stone — centuries before farming arrived. The settlement’s phases (Proto-, Lepenski Vir, Neolithic) span 9500–5500 BP; the modern museum (2011) shelters the site in situ above the dam-raised river.
