ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Kazan is the gorge’s heart: the Danube narrows to 150 metres between cliffs of 800 — the deepest river gorge in Europe — and the current still pulls. Above the water hangs the Tabula Traiana, the Roman tablet of 100–103 that commemorates the emperor’s road cut into the cliff (re-sited higher when the dam raised the river); the Mrakonia viewpoint above Donji Milanovac sees the whole loop. The boat trip through the narrows is the gorge’s essence.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Trajan’s engineers (100–103) cut the military road into the cliffs — the tablet commemorates it; the road served the Dacian wars and the Danube fleet. The dam (1972) drowned the lower road and calmed the rapids — the narrows keep their drama at 150 m wide.
