ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Golubac is the fairy-tale castle of the Danube: nine towers climb the cliff where the river enters the Iron Gates, the walls running from the water’s edge to the hill’s top. Restored (2011–16, with the visitor centre and the walkways), it is now Serbia’s most dramatic fortress visit — the towers climbable, the river below, the gorge opening beyond.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Built in the 14th century on the Roman-era site, Golubac guarded the gorge’s mouth through the Hungarian-Ottoman wars — besieged, traded, lost and won through the 15th century (the knights’ tournament of 1428 saw the young knight Zawisza Czarny die in the river). The Ottomans held it to 1867; the restoration returned the towers and the story.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
Nine towers climb the cliff — the tenth fell into the Danube (its base is still seen at low water).
The fortress guarded the Iron Gates’ mouth — the toll of the Danube’s greatest gorge.
The 1428 siege’s tournament — the Polish knight Zawisza Czarny, Europe’s famous champion, died in the river.
The 2011–16 restoration made it Serbia’s most visited fortress — the walkways cling to the walls.
