ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kanli Kula is the great fortress that crowns the hill above the Herceg Novi old town, the highest and most imposing of the town’s defensive works. Its name means “Bloody Tower” in Turkish, a record of the Ottoman phase that built the greater part of the present fortress, which the Venetians later rebuilt and strengthened when they took the town. The ramparts enclose a wide inner space that now serves as an open-air summer stage, and the walls command the finest panorama over the old town, the bay entrance and the coast. It is a controlled site: opening hours, tickets, performances, rehearsals and maintenance all vary, and entry is never guaranteed.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Kanli Kula was built largely by the Ottomans during their long hold on Herceg Novi, on the site of earlier fortifications, and its massive ramparts reflect Ottoman military engineering. When the Venetians took the town in 1687 they rebuilt and reinforced the fortress, adapting it to their own defensive system and giving it much of its present form. The fortress guarded the landward approach to the town and the heights above the harbour, and it remained the town’s principal citadel through the Venetian, French and Austrian periods. In the 20th century the wide inner enclosure was converted into an open-air summer stage, giving the fortress a second life as a performance venue while preserving its ramparts and its view.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The ramparts and walls — the massive Ottoman-Venetian stone enclosure, walked for the view down over the old town and the bay.
The open-air stage — the summer performance space set within the fortress walls, used for concerts and events when the programme allows.
The view over the bay entrance — the panorama from the heights to the coast, the old town and the open sea, the finest in Herceg Novi.
The gate and approach — the fortified entrance and the climb up through the old town to the fortress above.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Kanli Kula is the fortress that gives Herceg Novi its skyline and the place from which the town’s gateway role is most clearly read — the height that commands the entrance to the bay. For a visitor it is the one high viewpoint over the town and the coast, and the clearest single monument to the layered Ottoman and Venetian history of the place. But it is a controlled site, and the view rather than a guaranteed interior visit should be the basis of the plan.
