ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Šetalište Pet Danica is the classic Herceg Novi stroll — a long seaside promenade that runs from the marina along the foot of the old town and out along the coast, with the sea on one side and the stacked stone of the town above. The Škver waterfront, around the marina and the old-town foot, is the town’s principal public space, the place where locals walk, swim and gather in the evening. Because Herceg Novi is mild and green, the promenade is shaded by cypress, palm and mimosa, and it works in every season — which is why the town has been a winter resort since the 19th century. The promenade is easier than the steep old town above, but it is not universally step-free, and swimming, lifeguards, shade and beach facilities should never be assumed.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Šetalište Pet Danica takes its name from the Pet Danica (Five Danicas) — a reference to the five young women from Herceg Novi killed in 1942 during the Second World War, commemorated along the waterfront. The promenade developed as the town’s principal seafront walk through the 19th and 20th centuries, as Herceg Novi grew from a fortress port into a spa and resort, and the Škver waterfront around the marina became its social centre. The promenade links the fortresses, the old-town foot and the coastal beaches, and it remains the place of the evening šetnja, the traditional walk that is the social heart of the town.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The promenade itself — the flat, paved seaside walk from the marina past the old town and along the coast, shaded by cypress, palm and mimosa.

02

The Škver waterfront and marina — the town’s principal public space, the social centre and the place of the evening šetnja.

03

The fortresses seen from below — Forte Mare and the old-town walls read from the water side as you walk.

04

The swimming platforms and small beaches — reached by steps down from the promenade, with no guaranteed facilities, lifeguards or shade.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Herceg Novi is a town built to be walked along the sea, and the Šetalište Pet Danica is the expression of that — the flat, shaded counterpart to the steep old town. For a visitor it is the place where the town’s mild climate becomes tangible, and the easiest way to understand why Herceg Novi has been a resort for more than a century rather than only a fortress port. It is the reliable, accessible core of a visit when the controlled fortresses are closed.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The promenade is public and open at all times, free to walk. It is easier than the old town but not universally step-free — some sections include steps, ramps and uneven stone.
Swimming
Swimming is possible from platforms and small beaches reached by steps from the promenade, but safe swimming, lifeguards, shade and beach facilities should never be assumed; check conditions locally.
Terrain
The promenade is largely flat and paved, but wet stone and steps can be slippery; wear shoes with grip and take care at the water’s edge.
Context
The Šetalište Pet Danica runs along the seafront from the marina through and beyond the old town; the Škver waterfront is the marina area at its eastern end.
