ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Španjola is the fortress on the upper slopes above the Herceg Novi old town, the third of the town’s great defensive works alongside Kanli Kula and Forte Mare. Its name recalls the brief Spanish garrison of the 16th century, though the present fabric is largely Ottoman and Venetian. It stands above the old town and opens a wide view over the town, the bay entrance and the coast, and it is currently undergoing revitalisation — access, paths and opening arrangements may change or close at short notice. The fortress should be treated as a conditional viewpoint: never cross fencing, enter works areas or climb walls, and plan the visit only when lawful access is confirmed.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Španjola takes its name from the Spanish, who briefly held Herceg Novi in the 16th century and are traditionally associated with work on the upper fortress, though the present fabric was shaped largely by the Ottomans and the Venetians who followed them. The fortress guarded the high ground above the old town, completing the defensive circuit that ran from the sea at Forte Mare up through Kanli Kula to the upper slopes. Through the centuries of Ottoman, Venetian, French and Austrian rule it remained part of the town’s fortification system, and it now stands as a viewpoint above the modern town, with a programme of revitalisation that affects how and when it can be visited.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The fortress walls — the upper defensive fabric above the old town, read from lawful public areas when access allows.

02

The view over the town and bay — the wide panorama from the upper slopes to the old town, the bay entrance and the coast.

03

The upper-town approach — the climb or approach to the fortress, with views opening over the rooftops below.

04

The revitalisation works — the ongoing conservation, to be respected: never cross fencing, enter works areas or climb walls.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Španjola completes the defensive triangle of Herceg Novi — the upper fortress that crowns the heights above Kanli Kula and Forte Mare, and the widest viewpoint over the town. For a visitor it is the most conditional of the town’s fortresses, and the one most shaped by current works; the view from lawful public ground is the reliable experience, and any interior or rampart access must be confirmed and respected. It is an optional stop, never the basis of the plan.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Španjola is undergoing revitalisation. Access, paths and opening arrangements may close or change at short notice; check current lawful access directly before visiting. Never cross fencing, enter works areas or climb walls.
Terrain
The fortress stands on the upper slopes above the old town, reached by a climb; surfaces are uneven stone, with exposed edges and works areas. Wear shoes with grip and take care near drops and fencing.
Visiting
Treat Španjola as a conditional viewpoint; plan it only when lawful access is confirmed, and never as the core of the day.
Context
Španjola is the upper fortress of Herceg Novi, above Kanli Kula and the old town, on the slopes toward the heights behind the bay.
