ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Bjelasica range is the gentler mountain massif that rises east of Kolašin — rounded peaks, broad high pastures and the source streams of several rivers, including the lakes of Biogradska Gora on its western flank. Above the tree line, the katuns are the seasonal summer settlements of herdsmen who move their livestock up to the high pastures each year, a pattern of transhumance that has shaped the highland landscape for centuries. These are living, working landscapes, not staged attractions: the huts, meadows and animals belong to families and communities, and a visitor is passing through a working highland, not visiting a park. Routes, conditions and access depend on season, weather and the people there, and the right way to visit is with respect for private property, livestock and the communities whose livelihood the katuns are.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Bjelasica range has shaped highland life around seasonal transhumance for centuries — the movement of herdsmen and their livestock between lowland winter grounds and high summer pastures. The katuns above the tree line are the summer layer of that life, rebuilt and reused each season, and the meadows, fences and paths around them are working pasture, not visitor infrastructure. The range’s gentler form compared to Durmitor made it both a transhumance landscape and, in modern times, a ski and hiking area, but the katuns themselves remain a living cultural landscape first and a sight for visitors second.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The rounded peaks and high pastures of Bjelasica — the broad, open mountain landscape above the tree line, reached only on confirmed, marked routes in settled weather.

02

The katun settlements — seasonal herdsmen’s huts and working summer pastures that are living highland life, not staged attractions; respect private property, livestock and the families there.

03

The transhumance landscape — meadows, streams and paths shaped by centuries of seasonal movement of livestock, the cultural pattern that defines the range.

04

The highland flora and open views — the meadow plants, grasslands and long sightlines across the Bjelasica massif, weather and access permitting.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Bjelasica and its katuns are the living cultural landscape behind Kolašin’s mountain identity — the high pastures and seasonal settlements that have shaped highland life for centuries. For a visitor who confirms safe, marked routes and approaches with respect, it is a rare chance to see transhumance still working, but it is not a managed attraction: it is a working landscape of private property, livestock and local communities, and the right conduct is to pass through respectfully and leave no trace.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The high pastures are reached only on foot from confirmed trailheads above Kolašin and Biogradska Gora; routes are seasonal, weather-dependent and often unmarked, so check locally and carry an offline map.
When
June to September when the katuns are most likely to be active and the high ground most likely to be clear of snow; conditions change fast and snow can linger or return outside summer.
Conduct
Respect private property, livestock and the herdsmen’s working life; keep dogs under control, leave gates and fences as you find them, stay on marked routes and take all litter away.
Context
The Bjelasica katuns are a living seasonal transhumance landscape of working summer pastures, not a staged visitor attraction; the huts and meadows belong to local families and communities.
