ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Morača Monastery is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery founded in 1252 by Prince Stefan Vukanović, set on a terrace above the Morača river in the canyon corridor that climbs from the coast to the Kolašin highlands. It is the spiritual and historical anchor of the Morača corridor — a working monastery whose church, frescoes and precinct record more than seven centuries of continuous religious life. It is an active religious site first and a visitor attraction second: services and the monastic day take priority, interiors and photography are conditional rather than guaranteed, and visitors are expected to dress and behave modestly. The monastery is reached by the narrow, winding canyon road that carries the Morača corridor, where lawful parking and careful driving matter as much as the visit itself.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Morača Monastery was founded in 1252 by Prince Stefan Vukanović, of the Nemanjić dynasty, as a Serbian Orthodox monastery on the canyon of the Morača river. Its church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, and its surviving frescoes are among the finest medieval religious art in the region, with layers from the 13th century onward. The monastery has been a continuous centre of religious life for more than seven centuries, surviving periods of Ottoman rule, conflict and renewal, and it remains an active monastery today. Its setting in the Morača canyon placed it on the historic route between the coast and the northern highlands, the same corridor that carries the modern road and rail line through Kolašin.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here

The active monastic life — a working Serbian Orthodox monastery where services and the monastic day take priority over visitors; dress and behave modestly.
The canyon setting — the monastery terrace above the Morača river in the narrow canyon corridor between the coast and the Kolašin highlands.
The Morača corridor road — the narrow, winding canyon road that reaches the monastery, where lawful parking and careful driving are part of any visit.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Morača Monastery is the historical and spiritual anchor of the Morača corridor — a medieval foundation that has carried continuous religious life for more than seven centuries and links Kolašin’s mountain world to the canyon country between the highlands and the coast. For a visitor it is the deepest historical stop in the area, but it is an active religious site first: services take priority, interiors and photography are conditional, and modest dress and conduct are expected. Reaching it is also a lesson in the canyon road itself, where lawful parking and patient driving are essential.
