ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Dulovine Botanical Garden is a compact garden above Kolašin that preserves the indigenous mountain flora of the Bjelasica highlands — the wildflowers, herbs, trees and shrubs that define the region’s meadows, forests and high pastures. It is a place to see the living plants of the highlands gathered together, rather than scattered across the slopes, and it gives a concentrated introduction to the mountain flora that a visitor will otherwise meet only in passing on the trails. Opening hours, admission, guided access and which collections or visitor facilities are available all vary and must be checked locally; the garden should not be assumed to be open, staffed or fully stocked on any given day.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The garden was established to preserve and display the indigenous flora of the Bjelasica and wider northern Montenegrin highlands, a region of great botanical variety shaped by altitude, limestone karst and the meeting of Mediterranean and continental climates. Its purpose has always been conservation and education rather than display, and the collections reflect what grows — or grew — on the surrounding mountain pastures and forest edges. Like many small mountain gardens, its continuity has depended on local effort and seasonal conditions, and what is open to visitors at any time is set by those who maintain it.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The indigenous mountain flora — wildflowers, herbs, trees and shrubs of the Bjelasica highlands gathered in one place, subject to which collections are currently on display.
The meadow and pasture plants — the flora of the katun pastures and forest edges that define the highland landscape above Kolašin.
The conservation purpose — a garden built to preserve and explain mountain flora rather than to display ornamental beds, reflecting the botany of the region.
The mountain setting — the garden above Kolašin, with the Bjelasica slopes rising behind it and the highland meadows that the collection represents.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Dulovine Botanical Garden is the one place near Kolašin where the indigenous mountain flora of the Bjelasica highlands is gathered and explained, giving a visitor a concentrated introduction to the plants that define the region. It is a small, conservation-minded garden rather than a managed attraction, and its value lies in showing the living botany of the highlands — but only when open, and only for the collections currently on display, which is why access must always be confirmed locally.
