ABOUT THIS ITINERARY
Konjic packs a remarkable range into a small town: an Ottoman bridge destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 2009, a Cold War command bunker built in secret for the Yugoslav leadership, a UNESCO-listed woodcarving craft, a glacial lake in the forest and a high Dinaric massif above it all. Two days are enough to take in the bridge, the woodcarving and the bunker, and to choose one outdoor line — a licensed-operator descent of the Neretva canyon, a quieter day at Boračko Lake, or, for experienced and properly equipped walkers, a full day on Prenj. This itinerary keeps the cultural layer for the first day and the outdoor layer for the second, so the town and the mountain each get the time they deserve.
OVERVIEW
The route at a glance
Day one is a walkable town day: the restored Old Stone Bridge over the Neretva, the woodcarving tradition of the old town, and a guided visit to the ARK D-0 bunker outside town. Day two is the outdoor day, built around a licensed-operator Neretva rafting descent as the principal option, with Boračko Lake presented as a lower-intensity alternative rather than an additional compulsory stop. Prenj is a separate demanding full-day objective for experienced, properly equipped visitors using confirmed safe routes — it is not folded into day two as a casual add-on. The two days can be taken in either order around the ARK D-0 schedule and the rafting conditions; both depend on advance booking and current information.
THE SCHEDULE
Day by day
Bridge, woodcarving and Cold War history
A walkable town day — the restored Ottoman stone bridge, the UNESCO-listed woodcarving of the old town, and a guided visit to the ARK D-0 Cold War bunker.
- Morning
The Old Stone Bridge and the old town
1–2 hoursBegin at the restored six-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the emerald Neretva, the landmark of Konjic, built in 1682–1683, destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed in 2009. Cross it slowly — the crest is worn smooth — and read the town from the riverbank: the gorge above, the old town on either bank, the mountains behind. The bridge and the riverside are public and open at all hours, and the compact old town spreads out from it on foot.
- Late morning
The woodcarving of the old town
1–2 hoursWalk the old-town lanes to seek out the woodcarving for which Konjic is known. Konjic woodcarving (konjičko drvorezbarstvo) was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, and the town is its centre. Not every workshop is open to walk-in visitors, so confirm museum, showroom, demonstration or workshop access in advance; the bridge and the riverside between the workshops are public throughout.
- Afternoon
Guided visit to ARK D-0
1–2 hoursTake a guided visit to ARK D-0, the secret Cold War command bunker built for the Yugoslav leadership beneath a hill outside Konjic between 1953 and 1979, now a museum and a contemporary art biennial. The visit walks the access tunnel, the command and living quarters and the art installations. Access is by guided visit only; confirm the current schedule and booking arrangements in advance, as access is not guaranteed on every day of the year. The bunker is a short drive outside town, so arrange transport as part of the visit or separately.
GETTING AROUND
The morning is entirely on foot in the compact old town around the bridge. The afternoon visit to ARK D-0 is a short drive outside Konjic; arrange transport as part of the guided visit or separately. No transport is needed within the old town itself.
EAT & DRINK
Begin with a bakery breakfast or a café in the old town. Plan lunch around the old town before or after the bunker visit — everyday Bosnian options such as ćevapi, grilled meat and pies are widely available, and a long Bosnian coffee is the natural pause. For the evening, the riverside near the bridge stays open after dark.
Upper Neretva adventure
An outdoor day built around a licensed-operator Neretva rafting descent, with Boračko Lake as a lower-intensity alternative. Prenj is a separate demanding full-day objective, not a casual add-on.
- Full day
Raft the Neretva canyon with a licensed operator
A half-day to a full dayThe principal outdoor option is a descent of the Neretva canyon above Konjic with a licensed operator — emerald water, limestone walls and rapids through one of the deepest gorges in the Balkans. The descent depends entirely on a qualified operator, the water conditions on the day and the operator’s current safety assessment; the launch and finish points and the section run vary with conditions and are set by the operator. Book in advance and confirm what is supplied, where the trip begins and ends, and what conditions to expect.
Optional stops
- Full day
Boračko Lake — the lower-intensity alternative
A half-day to a full dayIf a canyon descent is more than you want, Boračko Lake is the lower-intensity alternative: a glacial lake in the forest at the northeastern foot of Prenj, a short drive above the town, with swimming, a small boat on the water and a quiet shore. It is presented as an alternative to rafting, not as an additional compulsory stop after it. The coordinate identifies the lake itself, not a guaranteed beach entrance, parking area or private facility; confirm access and parking for the day.
- Full day
Prenj — a separate demanding objective
A full dayFor experienced, properly equipped walkers using confirmed safe marked routes, Prenj is a separate demanding full-day objective: a high Dinaric massif with peaks above 2,000 metres, rapidly changing weather, limited water on the high karst and residual mine/UXO risk in some areas. It is not a casual add-on after rafting or a lake day; it stands as its own undertaking, normally with an experienced local mountain guide for demanding objectives. Use current safe-route information and check the weather before any serious hike.
GETTING AROUND
Rafting, the lake and the mountain all require separate transport or operator arrangements from Konjic; the launch and finish points vary by operator and conditions. Arrange transport with the operator or a local vehicle in advance. There is no single put-in or trailhead, so confirm the meeting point the day before.
EAT & DRINK
If rafting, the operator usually advises on food and water for the trip — confirm what is supplied and bring water regardless. For a lake day, take provisions or plan a meal back in Konjic in the evening. A riverside dinner in the old town rounds off the two days.
SEASONAL NOTES
When to go
Warmer months, from May to September, are best for rafting, the lake and most outdoor activities; high-mountain objectives on Prenj only with suitable conditions and current local guidance, generally from July into September. The historic centre and the bridge can be visited more broadly through the year. Guided access to ARK D-0, its schedule and its booking arrangements must be checked in advance — do not assume year-round access. Daylight varies widely through the year, so check the sunset time for the day you visit.
