ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kopaonik was mining country long before it was skiing country. The fortress of Gvozdac stood above the Brzećka river to guard the workings — silver, lead and iron dug from the mountain since the 14th century under Serbian kings and Saxon miners, later under the Ottomans. The ruin is a half-hour forest walk from Brzeće, reached through the spruce that covers the old workings, and pairs naturally with the village’s log-house restaurants for the mountain’s quietest half-day.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The mountain’s name itself comes from the diggings — “kopaonik” from the Serbian for “digger’s place”. Saxon (Sasi) miners opened the workings in the 14th century under king Milutin; the fortress of Gvozdac was raised to guard the road and the ore, and the mines ran through the Ottoman centuries, their silver finding its way across the Balkans. Mining faded in the 19th century as the forests and pasture took over — the fortress decayed into the ruin of walls that hikers find today, and the mountain turned from ore to timber, grazing and finally tourism.
