ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Hum is the hill that closes the western end of Korčula above Vela Luka — a winding road through olive groves, then footpaths to the abandoned Habsburg-era fortress on the summit. The walk is the west end’s classic outing: aromatic pine and maquis, butterflies in season, and on top a 360-degree reading of the sea — the long grey line of Hvar to the north, the islets toward Lastovo to the south, Vela Luka’s bay directly below, and the open Adriatic beyond. The route can be extended down through the Poplat bay side toward the shore, or walked as a short summit return.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You start from the edge of Vela Luka, follow the winding road past olive groves, and take the footpath up through pine and maquis to the fortress ruins. The walls of the old fort still stand to shoulder height, and the views open progressively as you climb. Round trip is roughly seven kilometres with a steady climb; allow two and a half to three hours. Bring water — there is none on the route — and start early in summer.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
A hike above Vela Luka on Korčula to the Habsburg-era fortress on Hum hill — olive groves, pine paths and 360-degree views over Hvar, Lastovo and the west-end bays.
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The abandoned Habsburg fortress on the summit of Hum.
360-degree views: Hvar to the north, the Lastovo islets to the south.
Olive groves and aromatic pine-maquis the whole way.
The descent option through the Poplat bay side to a swim.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A steady but untechnical walk on road, gravel and footpath; the trail is marked but overgrown in patches — real shoes matter. Summer heat is strong on the bare upper slopes: go early or late. The fortress is abandoned and unlit; mind the walls and don’t climb on the structures. No water or shops on the route.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Hum is the viewpoint that explains the west end of the island — the bays, the channels and the fortress history of the Austrian coast in one climb. For a visitor it is the best half-day walk on Korčula’s west side.
