ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Krk old town is a walled Venetian core on a small headland, its lanes rising from the harbour to the cathedral square and the Frankopan castle that crowns the town. The walls that enclose it were built and rebuilt by the Romans, the Venetians and the Habsburgs, and the cathedral complex beside the castle holds churches from the early Christian period onward. It is the historic heart of the island and the natural base for a visit.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Krk was ruled for centuries by the Frankopan princes, whose castle still stands in the town, before passing to Venice in the 15th century. The walls and the cathedral complex grew over many centuries — the Romanesque cathedral of the Assumption sits beside the early Christian church of St Quirinus and the Roman thermal baths — and the town’s Italian name, Veglia, reflects its Venetian period. The island’s Glagolitic script, the old Slavonic alphabet, survived here longer than anywhere else in Croatia.
