ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Mediana is Constantine’s home ground: the late-Roman residence quarter outside Naissus, where the emperor (born here in 272) built the villa complex he returned to — mosaic floors, the bath complex and the villas’ outlines under the protective roofs. The site tells the story of the empire’s most consequential emperor and his Morava birthplace.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Constantine (272–337) was born at Naissus — his father’s army quartered here; the emperor’s affection for the town shows in Mediana’s palace quarter (4th century), the residence of his visits and his administration. The site’s mosaics and plans are Serbia’s most important late-Roman ensemble after Gamzigrad.
