ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The fortress is the city’s living room: built 1719–23 on Roman and medieval foundations, its walls hold a whole park — the Bali-bey mosque (restored, a gallery now), the old hammam, the archaeology pits, and the river promenade where the city walks. The walls’ circuit gives the town panorama; summer brings the festivals inside.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Ottomans built the present fortress 1719–23 — the Balkans’ finest military architecture of its moment — on the Roman Naissus’s and medieval foundations. It held the Constantinople road until 1878; after liberation the walls became the city’s park. The Bali-bey mosque survives as a cultural venue; the hammam as a café.
