ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Skull Tower is what its name says: after the battle of Čegar (May 1809), where the rebel commander Stevan Sinđelić blew up the powder magazine rather than surrender, the victorious pasha ordered the fallen rebels’ skulls built into a tower at the road into Niš — 952 of them, a warning to the province. Serbia kept it, sheltered it in a chapel, and turned the warning into a shrine — the Balkans’ starkest monument to resistance.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The battle of Čegar (31 May 1809) ended with Sinđelić’s act — the shot into the magazine that killed friend and foe alike. The pasha Hurshid built the tower from the dead (952 skulls, embedded in a 4.5-m tower) as the road’s warning. Through the 19th century families picked out their skulls; the chapel (1892) shelters the remainder — some 50 skulls remain in the wall, Sinđelić’s honoured in a separate niche.
