ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kopački Rit is one of the largest wetland reserves in Europe, a floodplain at the confluence of the Drava and the Danube just north of Osijek, and the natural day trip from the city. It is a maze of channels, lakes, reedbeds and willow forest that shelters hundreds of bird species, deer and wild horses, and it is explored by boat, by bike and on foot. For a visitor to Osijek it is the wild counterpoint to the baroque city.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Kopački Rit was protected as a nature park in 1999, recognised as one of the most important wetlands in the Danube basin. The reserve has been used for fishing, grazing and hunting for centuries, and the traditional management helped maintain the mosaic of channels and meadows. The wetland is now a Ramsar site and a major bird reserve, with a visitor centre at Tikveš and boat tours from the entrance.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Kopački Rit is the great natural sight of eastern Croatia and the reason to stay a second day in Osijek — a European-scale wetland on the city’s doorstep. For a visitor it is the wild day that balances the baroque Tvrđa.
