ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Tvrđa is the old heart of Osijek — an 18th-century Habsburg star fortress built to defend the frontier against the Ottomans, now a quarter of baroque barracks, squares and the Church of St Michael. It is the best-preserved baroque fortress ensemble in Croatia and the place where the city’s layered past is most visible, with the old walls, the gates and the grid of military streets still intact and increasingly restored as a cultural quarter.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Tvrđa was built from 1712 onward by the Habsburgs on the site of the Ottoman town that had stood here for 150 years, after the Austrians retook Slavonia. The star fortress was laid out by the engineer Maximilian Gosseau de Henef as a grid of barracks and squares within bastioned walls, and it became the military and civic centre of Osijek through the 18th and 19th centuries. It was damaged in the 1990s war and has since been restored building by building, with several houses now museums and galleries.
