ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks is the essential Perast experience and the only way to reach the man-made island. Small boats run the few hundred metres across the water from the Perast waterfront, but the crossing is entirely conditional: boat schedules, prices, availability and return arrangements vary, and visitors must confirm the route, total duration, price, life jackets, landing and return directly with a licensed operator before boarding. There is no guaranteed waiting boat, no fixed fare and no assured church or museum entry. When it runs, the short crossing is also the best way to see Perast from the water, with the baroque waterfront and its two towers framed against the mountains.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You board at the Perast waterfront and, when a licensed operator is running, cross the short stretch of water to the island. The boat drops you at the island’s small landing, where — if the church and museum are open — you can enter the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks and see the Kokolja frescoes, the votive silver collection and the icon that, by tradition, began the island. Return arrangements must be confirmed with the operator before boarding; do not assume a boat will wait. From the island the view back to the Perast waterfront is the bay’s most photographed composition: the stone palaces, the two towers and the mountains behind, all in one frame.

The man-made island itself, built up over centuries by the seamen of Perast.
The church interior with Tripo Kokolja’s 68 frescoes and the rare marine seascapes, when open.
The votive silver museum — hundreds of plaques left by sailors in thanks for safe voyages.
The view back to the Perast waterfront from the island — the bay’s most reproduced image.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Boats run from the Perast waterfront through the warmer months, but there is no fixed season, timetable or price, and operation depends on the weather, the sea and the operator. The crossing is short and on sheltered water, but landing depends on sea state and local restrictions. A fee covers the boat trip and a separate fee may apply to the church and museum, but neither is guaranteed and both should be confirmed with the operator. Day-trip boats from Kotor arrive from late morning, so an early visit is quieter when access allows. Bring a little cash, but do not assume cash-only or any specific payment arrangement.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Perast is defined by its two islands, and the man-made one can only be understood by standing on it — by seeing how a town built an island, voyage by voyage, and put its church on top. The boat trip is the link between the waterfront and that story, and it gives the water-level view of Perast that turns a short stop into the bay’s signature image. But every part of it is conditional on a licensed operator, the weather and the sea, and it should be planned as such rather than treated as guaranteed.
