ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The art colony and the restored mosque are the two cultural centres of Počitelj, and a focused visit to both is the way to read its modern revival alongside its Ottoman sacral core. The Gavrankapetanović complex, adapted from 1961 as the home of the artists’ colony with the conversion completed in the 1970s, holds the studios and accommodation that have brought painters and sculptors to the village for decades; the Šišman Ibrahim-paša (Hadži Alija) Mosque, built in 1562–63 and restored after war damage, is the active sacral heart of the settlement. The two are reached on foot through the lanes, and the visit covers several buildings rather than a single point, so no single location is given here.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The Gavrankapetanović complex — the residential-defensive group adapted from 1961 as the artists’ colony.
The colony studios — the working spaces of the residency, where the conversion was completed in the 1970s.
The restored mosque — the 1562–63 Šišman Ibrahim-paša (Hadži Alija) Mosque, restored after war damage.
The connection between them — the modern cultural revival and the Ottoman sacral core read together.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A walk between the colony buildings and the mosque through the stone lanes. The mosque is an active place of worship — dress modestly, remove shoes where asked and avoid prayer times. Not every colony building or studio is open to walk-in visitors, so confirm access in advance if you want to see inside the working spaces.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The art colony and the mosque are the two institutions that have kept Počitelj alive — one through cultural use, the other through worship — and a visit to both is the way to understand how the village survived its depopulation. For a visitor they are the cultural layer that complements the fortress and the houses.
