ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The fortress is the crowning element of Počitelj, set on the summit of the steep hill above the stone village. Its dominant feature is the Kula, a tall cylindrical tower that commands the Neretva crossing and the road below, and from whose top the whole amphitheatre of the village and the river plain open out. The fortress is reached by a short but steep climb up stone lanes and stairs from the lower settlement, and the ascent is the single most rewarding part of a visit — the view from the Kula is the panorama that frames the village. The fortifications are medieval in origin, with later Ottoman additions, and they survive as walls, gates and the tower itself rather than as a single intact castle.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The first documented reference to Počitelj dates from 1444, and a local tradition attributes the initial fortress to King Tvrtko I in 1383 — an assumption rather than a proven founding date. The settlement fell under Ottoman control in 1471, and the fortress was maintained and extended under Ottoman rule as the garrison that guarded the Neretva crossing on the road from the Adriatic to the interior. The Kula tower and the surviving walls belong to this layered medieval and Ottoman defensive history. The fortress and the urban ensemble below it have been on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2007.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The Kula tower — the tall cylindrical tower at the summit, climbed for the panorama over the village and the Neretva.
The fortress walls and gates — the surviving stretches of the medieval and Ottoman fortifications around the summit.
The view over the stone amphitheatre — the village seen from above, the classic top-down composition of Počitelj.
The Neretva plain — the river and the road below, the crossing the fortress was built to command.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The fortress is the reason Počitelj sits where it does — on the hill above the Neretva crossing — and the Kula is the single point from which the whole village and its setting are understood. For a visitor the climb to the tower is the climax of a visit and the place that turns a pretty stone village into a readable fortified landscape.
