ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Gavrankapetanović complex is one of the most distinctive residential groups in Počitelj, a cluster of stone houses and a defensive tower of the Gavrankapetanović family set on the climb toward the fortress. It combines the Ottoman-era tower-house tradition of Herzegovina — a residence built to be defended — with the larger residential complex of a prominent local family, and it is one of the elements that gives Počitelj its fortified-house silhouette on the hillside. From 1961 the complex was adapted as the home of the Počitelj artists’ colony, a conversion that was completed in the 1970s and that turned the family residence into studios and accommodation for visiting artists. The complex is a composite group of buildings rather than a single confirmed visitor point, so no single location is given here; the village coordinate should not be substituted for a specific building.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Gavrankapetanović complex is a residential-defensive group of the Ottoman period, reflecting the tower-house tradition of Herzegovina in which a prominent family’s home was built to be defended. From 1961 the complex was adapted for the Počitelj artists’ colony, with the conversion completed in the 1970s, turning the family residence into studios and living space for visiting painters and sculptors. The adaptation is one of the reasons the buildings survived in use while the wider village depopulated. The complex forms part of the ensemble placed on the UNESCO Tentative List in 2007.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Gavrankapetanović complex is the clearest example in Počitelj of the fortified-residence tradition and the modern home of the art colony that has kept it in use. For a visitor it is the building group that connects the medieval-Ottoman defensive architecture of the village to its 20th-century cultural revival.
