ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The sahat-kula, the Ottoman clock tower, is one of the distinctive silhouettes of Počitelj, rising among the stone houses on the climb up the hillside. It belongs to the family of clock towers that mark the Ottoman towns of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it signals the urban order of the village — a place organised around a mosque, a market and a measured public time. The tower is a landmark rather than a museum: it is read from the lanes around it and from across the Neretva, where it helps compose the classic amphitheatre view of the village.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The sahat-kula belongs to the Ottoman urban layer of Počitelj, part of the 16th-to-18th-century development that shaped the surviving ensemble. Clock towers of this kind were built across the Ottoman towns of the region to mark public time for prayer and trade, and the Počitelj tower is one of the elements that identify the village as an organised Ottoman settlement rather than a mere cluster of houses. It forms part of the ensemble placed on the UNESCO Tentative List in 2007.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The tower itself — the stone clock tower rising among the houses, a vertical accent in the amphitheatre.
The view from its base — the lanes and houses of the village seen from the foot of the tower.
The silhouette from across the river — the tower as part of the classic Počitelj composition from the Neretva bank.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The sahat-kula is the marker of Počitelj’s Ottoman urban order and one of the elements that distinguishes the village as a planned settlement. For a visitor it is a landmark that orients the climb and a key piece of the skyline seen from across the river.
