ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The mosque at the heart of Počitelj is the principal Ottoman sacral building of the village, built in 1562–63 and known both as the Šišman Ibrahim-paša Mosque and the Hadži Alija Mosque. It stands among the stone houses of the lower settlement, its dome and minaret rising against the hillside, and it is the architectural centre around which the Ottoman village was organised. The mosque suffered war damage in the 1990s and was subsequently restored, together with its minaret, and it is again an active place of worship. It is a modest, single-domed building in the Ottoman tradition, and its presence is the clearest marker of the 16th-century urban layer of Počitelj.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The mosque was built in 1562–63 — a date established by the historical record, correcting an older tradition that placed it in 1573. It is known by two names: the Šišman Ibrahim-paša Mosque, after its endowment, and the Hadži Alija Mosque, after its builder. The mosque and its minaret were damaged during the 1990s conflict and restored in the post-war period as part of the wider rehabilitation of the Počitelj ensemble. The building belongs to the principal 16th-to-18th-century Ottoman development phase that shaped the surviving urban fabric of the village.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The dome and minaret — the Ottoman silhouette of the mosque against the stone hillside.
The prayer hall — the restored interior of the single-domed building, an active place of worship.
The courtyard — the stone-paved space among the houses where the mosque sits at the heart of the village.
The restoration — the repaired masonry and minaret, evidence of the post-war rehabilitation of the ensemble.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The mosque is the sacral centre of Počitelj and the clearest architectural expression of its 16th-century Ottoman layer. For a visitor it is the building that anchors the lower settlement and the point around which the stone village is read.
