ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Pula’s old town is small enough to walk in a morning and dense enough to fill it — a compact circuit that takes in the Arena, the Roman forum and Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii and the Twin Gate, all within a few minutes of each other. Because the Roman street plan survives, you move from one monument to the next along the same streets the Romans used, with the Kastel fortress above and the harbour below.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You start at the Arena and walk down to the forum, where the Temple of Augustus and the Communal Palace share the Roman square. From there a short walk reaches the Arch of the Sergii, a Roman family triumphal arch, and the Twin Gate, part of the Roman city walls. The circuit can be walked up to the Kastel fortress for the panorama, or ended at the harbour. The whole walk is pedestrianised and flat except for the ascent to the Kastel.

What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The Arena and its underground exhibition, the headline Roman monument.
The forum, the Temple of Augustus and the Communal Palace on the civic square.
The Arch of the Sergii and the Twin Gate, the surviving Roman gates.
The Kastel fortress ramparts for the panorama over the whole circuit.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The old town is pedestrianised and compact; allow a half-day to walk it at leisure, longer if you ascend to the Kastel and visit the museum. The Arena and the temple have entry fees; the gates and the forum square are free to walk. In summer the streets are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the core Pula experience — the way to see the city as a Roman town rather than a single monument, and the most efficient use of a day for a first visit.
