ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The City Tower stands at the heart of the Korzo, a medieval gate tower that once controlled the entrance to the old town and was rebuilt in the baroque period with a clock, a dome and the Habsburg double-headed eagle still on its face. It is the single most recognisable landmark of the city centre and the natural meeting point on the promenade.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The tower began as a medieval gate in the town walls and was rebuilt after an earthquake in the 17th century into the baroque form it has today. The Habsburg eagle and the city’s coat of arms on its façade mark the period when Rijeka was a free port under Vienna and Budapest, and the clock has kept the city’s time ever since.
