ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Korzo is Rijeka’s living room — a long pedestrian promenade running through the city centre, lined with Habsburg and Secession façades, cafés, shops and the City Tower that marks the old town gate. It is where the city walks, drinks coffee and gathers, and it is the natural spine of any visit to the centre. The street still carries the layered identity of the city: Italian, Hungarian and Croatian names on the buildings, and a café culture that feels more Central European than Mediterranean.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Korzo developed as the main street of Habsburg Fiume (Rijeka’s Italian name) in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the free port made the city wealthy and the façades along the street were rebuilt in the styles of the day. The City Tower at its heart is older — a medieval gate tower rebuilt in the baroque period — and still carries the Habsburg double-headed eagle. The Korzo was pedestrianised in the late 20th century and remains the city’s social centre.
