ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
St Vitus Cathedral is one of the most unusual churches in Croatia — a circular baroque building raised by the Jesuits in the 17th century around a much older 13th-century church, so the cathedral is a rotunda rather than a long nave. It sits above the Rječina river near the centre, and its dome and circular plan make it immediately recognisable from the surrounding streets.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A church of St Vitus stood on this site from the 13th century. The Jesuits took it over in the 17th century and rebuilt it as a circular baroque church modelled on Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, incorporating the older walls. It became the cathedral of the Rijeka diocese in the 20th century, and its unusual plan makes it one of the few rotunda cathedrals in Europe.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The circular baroque plan and the dome, unique among Croatian cathedrals.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
St Vitus is the architectural surprise of Rijeka — a circular cathedral that breaks the pattern of every other church in the city. For a visitor it is a short, memorable stop between the Korzo and the river.
