ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Cathedral of St James is the reason Šibenik is on the UNESCO list — a 15th- and 16th-century cathedral built entirely of interlocking stone blocks without any mortar, the masterpiece of the Renaissance architect Juraj Dalmatinac and his successors. Its west façade is famous for the frieze of 71 carved heads, its dome and its stone vaulting are feats of engineering, and it is the only cathedral in Europe built wholly of stone in this way. It stands at the heart of the old town, a short walk from the harbour.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The cathedral was begun in 1431 and built over more than a century, with the architect Juraj Dalmatinac taking over in 1441 and designing the apse, the frieze of heads and the dome. After his death the work was continued by Nikola Firentinac and others, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1555. It was built to replace an earlier Romanesque church and was conceived as a wholly stone building — the blocks cut to interlock without mortar, an extraordinary technical achievement. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 2000.
