Cities & Culture
A fortified cathedral town at the mouth of the Krka, gateway to the Kornati islands.
Šibenik is a steep medieval town at the mouth of the Krka river, distinguished by its 15th-century Cathedral of St James — built entirely of stone without mortar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and by a ring of fortresses above the harbour. It is the gateway to the Krka waterfalls and the Kornati islands, and the oldest Croatian-founded city on the Adriatic coast.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Šibenik was founded by Croats in the 11th century — the oldest Croatian-founded city on the Adriatic coast — and grew into a Venetian naval base. Its Cathedral of St James, built over more than a century by Juraj Dalmatinac and others, is the most important Renaissance building in Croatia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its fortresses were reinforced against the Ottomans and now serve as cultural venues, and the town is the gateway to the Krka waterfalls and the Kornati islands.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Šibenik’s nature is the Krka and the sea. The Krka river reaches the sea at the town, and its national park upstream holds the Skradinski Buk and Roški Slap waterfalls, the travertine pools and the Visovac island monastery, with river fish, birds and the sub-Mediterranean forest of the Krka valley. Offshore, the Kornati archipelago — a maze of uninhabited karst islands — is the great marine sight within reach, and the Krka estuary is one of the few places where sea and river fish meet. Dolphins are occasionally seen in the channel.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Šibenik is about 1 hour from Zadar and 1.5 hours from Split by car on the A1 motorway, and about 3 hours from Zagreb. The nearest airports are Split and Zadar, each about an hour away. Direct buses run from Zagreb, Zadar and Split, and boat trips run from Šibenik to the Kornati.
The old town is walkable and steep; Krka is a 15-minute drive, best by car or tour, and the Kornati are reached by boat from the harbour.
One day covers the cathedral and a fortress. A second day adds Krka or a Kornati boat trip.
May–June and September for the coast and the parks; July and August for swimming and the fortress festivals.
