ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Perućica is a primeval forest — a tract of old-growth woodland that has never been commercially cut or cleared — preserved within Sutjeska National Park in a deep basin between the peaks of Maglić and Volujak. It is one of the last surviving old-growth forest reserves in Europe, and within the park it is treated as a strictly protected nature reserve rather than an open recreation area. The forest holds trees of great age and size, a closed canopy, and its own internal cycle of growth, decay and regeneration, undisturbed by forestry. Within the reserve lies the Skakavac waterfall, which drops through the trees into the basin. Because of its protected status, Perućica is not a place visitors can freely enter on their own: access is subject to the park’s rules and to authorised arrangements, and the forest is experienced through designated viewpoints and guided access rather than independent wandering. For a visitor it is the ecological heart of Sutjeska — the feature that makes the park a wilderness destination of European importance — and the reason any visit to the reserve is organised through the park authorities.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Perućica was identified as a site of exceptional natural value in the mid-20th century and placed under protection as part of the establishment of Sutjeska as a national park in 1962, when the forest was designated a strictly protected strict nature reserve within the park. The decision preserved a remnant of the old-growth forest that once covered far more of the Dinaric Alps, keeping it from the logging that transformed the surrounding mountains. The reserve has since been studied as a reference example of primeval forest ecology in the region, and its protected status means that human intervention is kept to the minimum required for research and controlled visitor access. The Skakavac waterfall within the reserve has become the best-known single feature of Perućica, visible from a designated viewpoint above the basin.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The old-growth canopy — trees of great age and size rising from the basin, the defining image of a primeval forest untouched by commercial forestry.

02

The Skakavac waterfall — a tall cascade that drops through the forest into the basin, the best-known single feature of the reserve, viewed from a designated viewpoint.

03

The basin setting — the forest fills the deep valley between Maglić and Volujak, so the reserve is read as a whole from the surrounding heights rather than from within.

04

The viewpoint over the reserve — the principal way visitors experience Perućica, looking into the old-growth basin from a designated point above it.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Perućica is the feature that lifts Sutjeska above an ordinary mountain park and makes it a destination of European significance. Old-growth forest of this extent is rare on the continent, and the reserve preserves a living remnant of the primeval Dinaric landscape. For a visitor it is also the part of the park that most clearly demands respect: because it is strictly protected, it is experienced through viewpoints and authorised access rather than free entry, and that restraint is part of what keeps the forest intact.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Perućica is a strictly protected nature reserve. Access is subject to the park’s rules and to authorised arrangements; visitors should not enter the forest independently. Arrange any visit through the Sutjeska National Park authorities and follow their guidance on permitted routes, viewpoints and guides.
Visiting
The principal way to see the reserve is from a designated viewpoint over the forest basin. Entering the old-growth interior is restricted; check with the park authorities on what is permitted and how it must be arranged.
Best Time
The forest is greenest and most active from late spring to early autumn. Confirm seasonal access conditions with the park authorities before planning a visit.
Context
Pair Perućica with the wider mountain landscape of Sutjeska — Maglić, Zelengora and the Sutjeska canyon — for a full picture of the park, and base yourself at Tjentište where the park’s visitor facilities are concentrated.
