ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Tjentište is the part of the Sutjeska valley where the park’s wilderness gives way to its historical layer. Here stands the Valley of Heroes, a monumental memorial complex commemorating the Battle of the Sutjeska of 1943 — one of the defining engagements of the Yugoslav Partisan war, fought across these same mountains and forests. The centrepiece is a vast concrete sculpture by Miodrag Živković, set in the open valley floor and framed by the surrounding peaks, with a cemetery of fallen fighters nearby. Tjentište is also the practical hub of the national park: the visitor facilities, accommodation and access points for the park’s mountain routes are concentrated here, so most visits to Sutjeska pass through it. In the summer the valley also hosts OK Fest, an open-air music festival that brings a brief cultural and event season to the memorial setting. For a visitor, Tjentište is both the place where the park’s wartime memory is encountered and the base from which its wilderness is reached.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

In May and June 1943 the Sutjeska valley and the surrounding mountains of Zelengora and Maglić were the scene of the Battle of the Sutjeska, in which Yugoslav Partisan forces broke through an Axis encirclement in one of the most consequential engagements of the war in the region. The battle became a central event of Yugoslav wartime memory, and in the socialist period a monumental memorial complex — the Valley of Heroes, with sculpture by Miodrag Živković — was built at Tjentište to commemorate the fallen. The complex was one of the largest of the Yugoslav memorial sites and drew visitors from across the country. The national park itself was established in 1962 in part to protect the landscape in which the battle was fought, so the wilderness and the memorial are protected together. In the post-Yugoslav period the memorial has remained in place as a heritage site within the park, and the valley has taken on a second life as the seasonal home of OK Fest.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Tjentište is the place where the two halves of Sutjeska — wilderness and memory — meet. The national park was created to protect both the primeval forest and the landscape of the 1943 battle, and the Valley of Heroes is the visible record of that second purpose. For a visitor it is also the unavoidable hub of the park, the place where most visits begin and end, and the point from which the rest of Sutjeska is organised.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Visiting
The memorial complex stands in the open valley and can be viewed from the surrounding area. Check locally for the status of any indoor visitor facilities and for the dates of OK Fest if visiting in summer.
