ABOUT THIS ITINERARY
Sutjeska is not a park to rush. Its three great features — the strictly protected Perućica primeval forest, the open Zelengora plateau with its glacial lakes, and the highest peak in the country, Maglić — sit close together on the map but belong to different kinds of day, and none of them is a casual single-day trip. This two-day itinerary splits them honestly: the first day is given to the Tjentište memorial and a guided, authorised visit to the Perućica reserve, where the old-growth forest is experienced through the park’s viewpoint and access rules rather than independent wandering; the second day is given to the wider mountain landscape, walking out onto the Zelengora plateau and its “mountain eyes.” The highest peak, Maglić, is marked as an optional objective rather than a stop on either day, because it is a demanding high-mountain route that needs appropriate experience, suitable conditions and professional or local guidance, and may require a separate day of its own. Nothing here is invented — no routes, timings, prices or access conditions are listed, because all of those are set by the park authorities and confirmed with them on the day.
OVERVIEW
The route at a glance
The two days follow the grain of the park rather than a checklist. Day 1 begins at Tjentište, the park’s hub, where the Valley of Heroes memorial commemorates the 1943 Battle of the Sutjeska and orients you to the landscape. From there the day moves to the Perućica primeval forest — a strictly protected old-growth reserve that visitors do not enter independently. The reserve is experienced through the designated viewpoint over the forest basin and through an authorised, guided visit arranged with the park authorities, the responsible way into one of Europe’s last primeval forests. Day 2 leaves the reserve behind and turns to the open mountain: a walking journey out onto the Zelengora plateau and its scattered glacial lakes, the gentler high country of the park, where the landscape of Sutjeska is read at its most spacious.
Both days are based at Tjentište and are high-mountain in character, planned with the park authorities or a certified guide. Maglić, the highest peak in the country, is offered as a separate optional objective for visitors with the experience and conditions for a demanding high-mountain day — it is not folded into either of the two core days, and it may require a third day of its own.
THE SCHEDULE
Day by day
Tjentište & the Perućica Primeval Forest
A day at the park’s hub and its strictly protected heart — the Valley of Heroes memorial at Tjentište, then an authorised, guided visit to the Perućica primeval forest experienced through its viewpoint and the park’s access rules.
- Morning
Tjentište & the Valley of Heroes
1–2 hoursBegin at Tjentište, the practical hub of the national park, where the visitor facilities and access points are concentrated. Here stands the Valley of Heroes, the monumental memorial complex commemorating the Battle of the Sutjeska of 1943 — a vast concrete sculpture by Miodrag Živković set in the open valley floor, with a cemetery of fallen fighters nearby. The memorial is the place where the park’s wartime memory is encountered, and the valley setting frames the surrounding peaks that give the first reading of the Sutjeska landscape. Walk the complex, read the memorial in its valley, and use Tjentište to orient yourself before turning to the wilderness.
- Late morning
The Perućica viewpoint
VariableFrom Tjentište the day moves to the Perućica primeval forest, the strictly protected old-growth reserve that is the ecological heart of Sutjeska. Perućica is not an open recreation area: it is a strict nature reserve, and the principal way visitors experience it is from the designated viewpoint over the forest basin, where the old-growth canopy fills the deep valley between the peaks of Maglić and Volujak and the Skakavac waterfall drops through the trees. Do not enter the reserve independently — access is subject to the park’s rules and to authorised arrangements.
- Afternoon
Explore Perućica with an authorised guide
A half-day or moreThe responsible way to experience the reserve is an authorised, guided visit arranged in advance through the Sutjeska National Park authorities. The park sets the permitted routes, viewpoints and guide requirements, and these determine what is possible on the day; the viewpoint is the reliable core of the experience, and any closer approach into the interior follows what the park allows. Throughout, the guide explains what makes Perućica ecologically significant — the age of the trees, the undisturbed cycle of the forest, the reasons for the access restrictions — so the visit is as much an education in why the forest is protected as a walk through it. Confirm the current arrangements and any conditions with the park authorities when you book.
GETTING AROUND
Day 1 is based at Tjentište and the nearby Perućica access points, reached by road within the park. A private vehicle or an arranged transfer is the practical way to move between Tjentište and the reserve; arrange the guided Perućica visit through the park authorities in advance, and follow their guidance on permitted routes and meeting points.
EAT & DRINK
Food options are concentrated at Tjentište, the park’s hub. Plan a simple meal at the visitor facilities near the memorial, and carry water and snacks for the guided reserve visit, which is a half-day or more in the mountains.
The Zelengora Plateau & Mountain Lakes
A walking day onto the open high country of the park — the rolling Zelengora plateau and its scattered glacial “mountain eyes,” the gentler counterpart to the protected reserve and the steep summit of Maglić.
- Morning
The Zelengora plateau and its mountain lakes
A full dayThe second day turns from the protected reserve to the open mountain. Zelengora is the broad plateau west of the Sutjeska canyon — rolling ridges, pastures and forest, broken by a series of glacial lakes set in hollows across the high ground, the “mountain eyes” for which the range is known. The lakes, including Orlovačko and Donje Bare, are the natural destinations for a walk across the plateau, each in its own basin of meadow and pine. It is the gentler high country of the park — less exposed than the Maglić ridge, less restricted than the Perućica reserve — and the place where the mountain scenery of Sutjeska is seen at its most spacious. Plan the route with the park authorities or a certified guide, and check conditions before setting out.
- Afternoon
Hike through the mountains and landscapes of Sutjeska
Full days in the mountainsThe wider hiking experience of Sutjeska is the connective tissue of the day — moving between the canyon, the plateau and the viewpoints over the primeval forest basin from above. The walking ranges from gentler plateau days to demanding high-mountain ground, and the weather can change quickly even in summer. Arrange routes through the park authorities or a certified local guide, especially for the higher ground, and treat the mountain with respect for conditions and experience. The earned, empty trails and the long views across the Dinaric Alps are the core of the Sutjeska hiking experience.
Optional stops
Maglić — the highest peak in Bosnia & Herzegovina (a separate high-mountain objective)
A demanding full day, or a separate day of its ownMaglić, at 2,386 metres, is the highest mountain in Bosnia & Herzegovina and the park’s dominant peak, and it is offered here as a separate optional objective rather than a stop on either core day. It is a demanding high-mountain route that requires appropriate experience, suitable conditions and professional or local guidance, and it may require a separate day of its own beyond the two-day framework. The summit sits on the border with Montenegro, close to the heart-shaped Trnovačko Lake, and the approach runs through the park’s mountain zone. Do not attempt it without arranging the ascent through the park authorities or a certified guide, and confirm conditions before planning it. Treat this as a serious mountain objective, not an add-on.
GETTING AROUND
Day 2 is a walking day on the Zelengora plateau, reached on foot from within the national park with Tjentište as the base. A private vehicle or arranged transfer brings you to the access points. Plan routes with the park authorities or a certified guide, and allow a full day for any crossing of the plateau.
EAT & DRINK
Carry water and snacks for a full day in the mountains — the plateau has no facilities. Eat at Tjentište before setting out and on return; the mountain huts along the longer routes offer simple fare for hikers where open.
SEASONAL NOTES
When to go
The reliable window for the park’s high ground runs roughly from late spring to early autumn, with the highest ground (including Maglić) best from July to September; snow can linger on the high trails well into early summer, shortening the season. The Perućica forest is greenest and most active from late spring to early autumn, but access is set by the park authorities and must be confirmed with them before planning a visit. Weather across all of the park can change quickly even in summer, with fog and storms a real consideration on the heights. No fixed seasonal conditions are guaranteed — check current conditions with the Sutjeska National Park authorities before any trip.
