ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Below the mausoleum hill lies the town of the uprising: Karađorđe’s stone tower (1811) — part fortress, part residence — with his wine cellar in the grounds, and the Peter’s House (Petrova kuća), the museum of the era that keeps the rebels’ weapons, documents and the furniture of the Šumadija household. The town’s small centre keeps the First Uprising’s memory in every second plaque; the vineyards around grow the Oplenac wines that Belgrade’s interwar elite drank.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Karađorđe made Topola his capital in 1804; the tower was his stronghold against both the Ottomans and rival rebels. After his assassination in 1817 (by order of Miloš Obrenović, the rival dynasty’s founder), Topola declined until the dynasty’s return made it a royal pilgrimage — and the state’s museum after 1945.
