ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
St George’s Church is Serbia’s mosaic bible: a five-domed white marble church whose every interior surface — walls, vaults, dome — is covered with mosaics copied from 13th-century Serbian frescoes and the great Byzantine tradition, made in Belgrade’s Puhl & Sladek workshop to designs by artists from across the Kingdom. The crypt below holds the marble sarcophagi of the dynasty, from Karađorđe to Peter II. The ensemble is intimate, cold in the best sense, and unlike anything else in Serbia.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
King Peter I laid the foundation in 1910; the church was consecrated unfinished in 1912. The Balkan Wars and WWI stopped work; between the wars king Alexander I drove the mosaic programme to completion (the last tesserae set in 1932). In 1941 the occupiers damaged the church; after WWII the communist state opened it as a museum — which is why the mosaics survived untouched. Peter II’s remains were reburied here in 2013 with his family, in a ceremony that returned the dynasty’s memory to the state’s public life.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The mosaic programme — follow the dome down: Christ Pantocrator, the Serbian saints, the dynasty’s donors.
The royal crypt — marble sarcophagi of the Karađorđević dynasty under the church.
The museum of the foundation — models, plans and the church’s own treasury.
GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
40 million tesserae cover 3,500 m² — the largest mosaic ensemble in Serbia and among the largest in Europe.
The mosaics copy 13th-century Serbian fresco painting — the Sopoćani and Mileševa traditions, in glass and gold.
Peter II of Yugoslavia, who died in the USA in 1970, was reburied here in 2013 — the only European monarch reinterred in his homeland after half a century.
The church’s white marble came from the Venčac quarry nearby — the same stone that faces Belgrade’s royal buildings.
