ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Ćurevac is a high viewpoint on the southern rim of the Tara canyon, reached by a forest trail from the road above, where the ground drops away into the deepest river gorge in Europe. Unlike the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, which spans the canyon at its upstream end, Ćurevac looks down the length of the gorge from above, giving a sense of the canyon’s depth and the sheer scale of the limestone walls on the far side. It is a quieter, wilder perspective than the bridge — a short walk through forest to an exposed high point — and it is the place to grasp how deep the canyon really is, provided the weather holds and the viewpoint is safely reached.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Tara canyon was carved over millions of years as the river cut down through the limestone of the Durmitor massif, producing a gorge whose depth — up to about 1,300 m — makes it the deepest in Europe. Ćurevac sits on the southern rim, where the plateau breaks into the steep descent to the river, and it has long been used as a lookout over the gorge by shepherds, foresters and, in time, visitors to the national park. It is part of the Durmitor National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage listing, and it remains a relatively undeveloped viewpoint — a forest trail and an exposed rim rather than a built observation deck.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The canyon depth — the drop from the Ćurevac rim to the Tara river below, the clearest single sense of how deep Europe’s deepest canyon is.

02

The forest approach — a trail through high pine and beech forest from the road to the rim, quieter than the bridge viewpoint.

03

The exposed viewpoint — an open high point at the canyon edge with no maintained barriers, where visitors must stay well back from the cliff.

04

The far limestone walls — the sheer sides of the gorge across the canyon, showing the scale of the river’s cutting over geological time.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Ćurevac gives the canyon-rim perspective that the Đurđevića Tara Bridge cannot — a view down into the depth of the Tara gorge from above, rather than across it. For a visitor it is the place that makes the canyon’s scale tangible, but it is an exposed, undeveloped viewpoint reached by a forest trail, not a roadside stop. Visitors must remain on the marked public route and well away from the cliff edges, and the viewpoint should only be attempted in clear weather, when fog does not hide the gorge and the rim is not slippery.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Reached by road from Žabljak toward the canyon rim, then a short forest trail to the viewpoint; separate transport is needed and the final approach is on foot.
When
May to October for the clearest views and the most reliable trail conditions; the viewpoint should be avoided in fog, high wind, ice or snow, when the exposed rim is dangerous.
Safety
There are no maintained barriers at the rim. Stay on the marked public route, keep well back from the cliff edge, and do not approach the canyon lip for a photograph. Children must be supervised at all times.
Weather
Mountain weather changes quickly and fog can hide the canyon entirely. Check conditions before setting out and turn back if visibility drops or the trail becomes slippery.
Context
Ćurevac is a canyon-rim viewpoint within Durmitor National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing; it is distinct from the Đurđevića Tara Bridge attraction.
