ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Sea Organ and the Monument to the Sun are the modern face of Zadar, set on the waterfront where the old-town peninsula meets the sea. The Sea Organ is a set of steps built over resonant tubes that the waves push air through, so the waterfront literally plays with the sea — a low, breathing music that changes with the swell. Beside it, the Monument to the Sun is a circle of solar panels in the pavement that glow at night, and together they have made the Zadar waterfront one of the most distinctive in the Mediterranean.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Sea Organ was designed by the architect Nikola Bašić and completed in 2005, as part of the rebuilding of the waterfront, and it won the European Prize for Urban Public Space. The Monument to the Sun followed in 2008, a circle of solar panels that store daylight and release it as coloured light after dark. Both were part of Zadar’s reinvention of its waterfront after the damage of World War II, and they turned a plain promenade into a sound-and-light installation that is now the city’s signature.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Sea Organ and the Monument to the Sun are the reason Zadar feels like more than an old-town museum — a contemporary art waterfront that frames the famous sunset. For a visitor they are the essential evening experience and the modern counterpoint to the Roman forum.
