ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
A walk through Zadar’s old town follows the original Roman street grid past the forum, St Donatus, the cathedral and a cluster of Romanesque churches, all within the walls of the old-town peninsula. Because the Roman plan survives, the walk reads like a circuit of a single ancient city, with the Venetian walls and the modern waterfront completing the loop.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You enter the old town through a land gate, walk the decumanus past the forum and St Donatus, visit the cathedral and its bell tower, and continue to the Romanesque churches of St Chrysogonus and St Mary. The circuit can end at the Sea Organ on the waterfront or at the Venetian harbour walls, and the whole walk is pedestrianised.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The old town is compact and pedestrianised; allow a half-day at leisure. The churches have entry fees; the streets and the forum square are free. In summer the lanes are busiest from late morning — walk early or in the evening.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the core Zadar experience — the ancient city in one walk, and the way to see how Roman, Byzantine and Croatian layers sit on top of each other on the peninsula.
