ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The tekija and the riverbank are the lower layer of a Blagaj visit, and together they are the most iconic part of the site. The tekija sits at the foot of the cliff beside the Buna spring, and a visit walks its stone-and-wood interior, its turba and its galleries against the rock, before stepping out onto the riverbank beneath the overhang of the cliff. The walk along the Buna, with the cliff above and the green water below, is the way to take in the spring and the setting at a slow pace. The tekija is an active place of worship, so dress modestly and be respectful of prayer.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The tekija — the Dervish monastery established around 1520, combining Ottoman and Mediterranean elements.
The turba — the burial chamber traditionally connected to Sari Saltuk, within the complex.
The riverbank — the green banks of the Buna beneath the sheer cliff.
The spring — the Buna emerging in full flow from the cavern at the base of the cliff.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A short, gentle walk along the riverbank to the tekija, and a visit to the monastery interior. The tekija is an active place of worship — dress modestly, remove shoes where asked, and be respectful of visitors in prayer; a small entry fee is usual. The riverbank can be damp and uneven, so wear shoes with grip. Early morning is quietest and gives the best light on the cliff.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The tekija and the riverbank are the image of Blagaj that most visitors take home — the monastery against the cliff above the spring. For a visitor they are the cultural and natural core of the site, the layer beneath the fortress climb.
