ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Resava cave was known to shepherds for generations before cavers mapped it in 1961; its tourist paths opened in 1974 and run today through 800 metres of the most richly ornamented galleries in Serbia. The cave’s two levels — a dry upper storey of red and yellow chambers and a live lower river passage — hold columns and draperies of extraordinary size, from the 8-metre pillars of the Great Hall to the white “snow forest” of the Northern chamber. The air holds a steady 7 °C year-round, and the walk is an easy loop with a guide at every hour.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The cave’s ornament began some 2.8 million years ago, as the Resava river cut its karst passages through the Homolje limestone. Shepherds and partisans knew the entrance chambers; the full system was mapped by cavers of the Belgrade speleological society in 1961, and the show-cave path — electric light, steps and bridges — opened in 1974 as one of the first in Yugoslavia. The upper galleries remain dry and fossil; the lower level’s river still builds the cave, one calcite season at a time.
