ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Apollonia’s park is one of the Mediterranean’s most atmospheric ruin sites: a green hill of cypresses and olives scattered with marble — the 2nd-century Agonothetes monument’s six columns and pediment, the council-house bouleuterion, the arcaded nymphaeum that fed the city’s water, the odeon and library of the school where the young Octavian studied. The 13th-century St Mary monastery at the hill’s crown holds the site museum — a hall of Roman statues found in the excavations. Quiet, shady and un-touristed compared with Butrint, it rewards slow walking.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The colony of 588 BC grew rich on the Illyrian trade and its coinage; Rome’s early ally, it hosted the young Octavian at its philosophical school when Caesar died (44 BC) — Cicero praised the city in his letters. The 3rd-century earthquake shifted the Vjosa, ended the harbour and slowly buried the city under silt; the medieval hill kept only its monastery. Austrian excavations began 1918, Leon Rey’s French mission worked 1924–38, and Albanian archaeology carried the park through the Communist era — the monastery museum opened 1958, the park is now on Albania’s UNESCO tentative list.
