ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Gračanica is the pearl of Milutin’s endowment: the compact five-domed church on the older basilica’s foundations, its facade of alternating stone and brick, and inside — the fresco programme of c. 1321–1324 that ranks among the highest achievements of Byzantine painting anywhere. The monastery is a living sisterhood; the UNESCO listing (2006) protects it.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Built 1321 by king Milutin (“I saw the ruins of the holy Virgin’s church and built it anew”, his charter says); the painters finished by c. 1324. The church survived the Ottoman era as a village parish; the sisterhood returned in the 20th century. UNESCO inscribed it in 2006 within “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo”.
